Home Depot (NYSE:HD) faced some big challenges in its second quarter, mainly centered around an unusual weather pattern that dampened sales growth in April before sending it spiking in May.
In a conference call with investors this week, the retailer's management team said they were happy with their execution in response to that difficult sales environment. They also provided context for shareholders around Home Depot's main growth opportunities, its profitability challenges, and its optimistic outlook.
Below are a few highlights from that discussion.

There are thousands of stocks investors can buy, so deciding which make the most sense to own in long-term portfolios, such as retirement accounts, can be tough. Economies can rise and fall, and competitors can disrupt business models, but our three Motley Fool contributors think Illumina (NASDAQ:ILMN), Intuitive Surgical (NASDAQ:ISRG), and Amazon (NASDAQ:AMZN) have what it takes to reward investors over the long haul. Read on to see what separates these stocks from the countless others that you could stash away for 20 years or more.

Shares of Intuitive Surgical (NASDAQ:ISRG) rose 31.1% in the first half of 2018, according to data from S&P Global Market Intelligence. The maker of the da Vinci line of robotic surgery tools crushed Wall Street's expectations in both of the earnings reports that were presented in this six-month span.

Robotic surgery pioneer Intuitive Surgical (NASDAQ:ISRG) has been a big winner, up 38% since the beginning of the year. Two companies that haven't been so fortunate are footwear maker Skechers (NYSE:SKX) and flooring retailer Tile Shop Holdings (NASDAQ:TTS), which have fallen 18% and 13% year to date, respectively. Here are some key metrics to watch when these companies report earnings in July.

If you buy stocks that have great business models and you have a long-term perspective, there's no reason to bail out even if a recession is right around the corner. As an example, let's consider Intuitive Surgical (NASDAQ:ISRG), a stock that I own. The company has a razor-and-blades type of business model with its robotic surgical systems and instruments and accessories for those systems.

Top 10 Growth Stocks To Watch For 2019: Nordstrom Inc.(JWN)
Advisors' Opinion:- [By Adam Levine-Weinberg]
It's been more than five years since upscale retailer Nordstrom (NYSE:JWN) first announced its plans to open a flagship store in Manhattan. While Nordstrom has several full-line stores in the New York metro area, this was to be its first one in New York City proper. Moreover, Nordstrom executives were determined to make it the company's best store -- and indeed, one of the best stores of any kind in the world.

To help investors hone in on some of the best retail stocks right now, we reached out to three Motley Fool contributors for their top retail picks. They came back with Target Corporation (NYSE:TGT), Nordstrom, Inc. (NYSE:JWN), and Home Depot (NYSE:HD). Here's why.
- [By Chris Lange]
Nordstrom Inc. (NYSE: JWN) released its fiscal first-quarter financial results after the markets closed on Thursday. The retailer said that it had $0.51 in earnings per share (EPS) on $3.56 billion in revenue, compared with consensus estimates from Thomson Reuters that called for $0.44 in EPS on revenue of $3.46 billion. The same period of last year reportedly had EPS of $0.37 and $3.35 billion in revenue.
- [By Adam Levine-Weinberg]
Nordstrom (NYSE:JWN) never expanded as much as its lower-price competitors, and since all of its stores are profitable, it hasn't felt the need to shrink dramatically. Nevertheless, it is closing stores here and there. Given that the Nordstrom store base is heavily skewed toward the best malls in North America, even a relatively small number of store closures and asset sales could provide a meaningful windfall for the company and its investors.
