Advisors' Opinion:
  • [By Dan Caplinger]

On that theory, hard-hit energy stocks that have suffered from the crash in oil prices could stand to benefit. Continental Resources (NYSE: CLR  ) , for instance, lost more than half its value in the last four months of 2014 as the exploration and production company with a huge stake in the Bakken shale play in North Dakota suffered from worries about the sustainability of its long-term growth in light of falling oil. Similarly, many small-cap gold and silver miners struggled through a poor 2014, and so companies like First Majestic Silver (NYSE: AG  ) and IAMGOLD (NYSE: IAG  ) arguably have more to gain from a January bounce.

On a percentage basis, the companies most affected by the adjustment are New Gold (NGD) and Iamgold which both saw reserve/resource lives fall by 47% however, we note that despite the adjustment, New Gold still has the second longest reserve/resource life in our group (37 years). Newmont Mining was the least affected by the adjustments with reserve/resource life declining by only 12% to 22 years from 25 years.

Advisors' Opinion:
  • [By Geoff Gannon] n. When it traded around $4.50 (it now more like $7.50 a share) it was a net-net with a good business and a moat. There were risks customer concentration for one and it was no blue chip. There was no diversification of product lines, customers, geography, industry, etc. It was closely tied to U.S. construction activity.

All this means it was no blue chip. Not that it didn have a moat. I felt it did. And certainly not that it wasn a high quality business. It demonstrably was (unleveraged returns on tangible equity were around 30%). And it was a net-net. In fact, it was a net cash stock at one time.

So they do happen. But they are rare. The usual distinction with net-nets is not between companies like that companies which may have a moat, do earn good returns on capital, etc. but between companies that are legitimate and illegitimate businesses.

A legitimate business is in my mind a historically profitable one. It is likely to have positive retained earnings (there are exceptions to this rule but it a good first check). It should have more years of profits (6 or more) than losses in the last 10 years. And it should be self-financing.

Compare this to an illegitimate business. The least legitimate businesses are those that while publicly traded have never turned a profit and can self finance. They may be net-nets but they are net-nets because they have issued stock in the past and then seen their share prices drop. Retained earnings are often negative.

There are other factors to consider. Is the business old or young? Is depreciation and other accounting especially conservative or aggressive? Are taxes especially conservative or aggressive? And is share issuance dilutive or not.

I think a legitimate business tends towards LIFO accounting, quicker depreciation, higher taxes paid as a percentage of reported income, and lower share issuance. There are exceptions. Many

  • [By Geoff Gannon]

Take George Risk (RSKIA). All of their competitors moved overseas. Theye still in Nebraska. Management doesn really claim they can either be better or cheaper than their competitors. They know they can be cheaper. And as far as better this isn dark chocolate theye selling. Beyond customization, timeliness, and reliability I not sure the idea of ualityhas much meaning in that business. It either frustration-free or it not. The two things George Risk can be are timely and customized. Both of those things are easier to be for American customers if you are manufacturing in the U.S.

  • [By Geoff Gannon] or even just above book value. It's a darn good business so I'm getting high quality assets and earnings power. That gets less clear when looking at lower quality businesses.

    For example:

Solitron (SODI) sells at 74% of NCAV, has decent z- and f-scores, a FCF margin of 5.3% and an ROA of 12%.

  • [By Geoff Gannon]

So, I think of simple industries as food, entertainment, etc. And anything where logistics provide a competitive advantage. I mentioned a company I own shares of George Risk Industries (RSKIA) before. Its advantage is the ability to deliver a cheap product on time. They can't produce the product for less than the competition. If the purchase price was huge relative to what the end customer was purchasing as part of the same activity (the end customer is construction in this case) price competition would be important. Instead, delivery is important.

Hot Up And Coming Companies To Own For 2015: Digital Realty Trust Inc.(DLR)

Digital Realty Trust, Inc., a real estate investment trust (REIT), through its controlling interest in Digital Realty Trust, L.P., engages in the ownership, acquisition, development, redevelopment, and management of technology-related real estate. It focuses on strategically located properties containing applications and operations critical to the day-to-day operations of technology industry tenants and corporate enterprise datacenter users, including the information technology departments of Fortune 1000 companies, and financial services companies. The company?s property portfolio consists of Internet gateway properties, corporate datacenter properties, technology manufacturing properties, and regional or national offices of technology companies. As of December 31, 2008, Digital Realty?s portfolio consisted of 75 properties, including 62 located in North America and 13 located in Europe. The company was founded in 2004 and is headquartered in San Francisco, California with additional offices in Boston, Chicago, Dallas, Los Angeles, New York, Northern Virginia, and Phoenix, as well as in Dublin, London, and Paris.

Advisors' Opinion:
  • [By Ong Kang Wei]

For example, Digital Realty (DLR) is the undoubted leader in the data storage industry, with a market cap of $8.3B. Its other three competitors, DuPont Fabros (DFT), CoreSite Realty (COR) and CyrusOne (CONE), have market caps of $1.5B, $930M and $430M respectively. In addition, with the level of complexity involving Digital's business making it immensely difficult for companies to operate data centre facilities, the company is in a good position for future growth. The company also has a wide network of 595 tenants (significantly more than other competitors), including CenturyLink (CTL), AT&T and Morgan Stanley (MS). This further secures its long term business prospects and also its dominance over its competitors.

AmBev is more than beer. They also own the national soft drink of choice, Guaraná. Is it time for AmBev stock to outperform other big beer makers listed on the NYSE?

    Story So Far

Monster Beverage onster Energy Ultra Redhas become one of the brand top sellers. This product debuted in September 2013. Its Muscle Monster protein shakes are second in the ready-to-drink protein segment: convenience and gas channels.

Monster Beverage sells "alternative" beverages under names such as Monster Energy and Muscle Monster. Monster Beverage expanded its revenue, net income, and free cash flow 11%, 50%, and 275%, respectively, in the most recent quarter.

Global volume increases from its Monster Energy brand and expansion into international markets served as the primary catalysts for the increase in revenue. Production efficiencies and lower expenses stemming from termination of distributors, lower insurance premiums, and lower marketing expenses contributed to gains in net income.

Favorable changes in operating assets and liabilities, specifically in inventory, accounts receivable, and income taxes payable, contributed to the year-over-year gain in free cash flow.

When we look at the company's balance sheet, we see $211.35 million in cash and $402.25 million in short-term investments, totaling $613.6 million in liquid assets. This compares nicely with last year's $222.51 million in cash, $97.04 million in short-term investments, totaling $319.55 million in liquid assets. Monster continues to be debt-free, which increases the likelihood that the company will be returning more of its income to investors once its growth starts slowing down further down the line.

The most important aspect of the Monster Energy brand dominance is that it has allowed the company to expand into other beverage segments, most recently the large protein-drinks category. The company's protein brand, called Muscle Monster, has gotten off to

    Take a straightforward approach
Some of the best stocks available today are those with recognizable brands. Think PepsiCo (NYSE: PEP  ) , Coca-Cola, or, yes, McDonald's. While more in-depth research is important, choosing companies you know with business models that you understand is a great starting point for new investors. This seems obvious, perhaps too easy, but take a closer look at a stock such as Pepsi and it's clear why this is a smart long-term investment.

The company's generic drug segment should also help push emerging market sales. Abbott markets generic pharmaceuticals outside the U.S. only, and while the division isn't growth-oriented -- sales actually fell around 2% for the quarter -- it provides an entry for the company to push into lucrative new markets such as India, where generics make up the large majority of the country's retail market. The company will face tougher competition in this industry, however: Firms such as India-based Dr. Reddy's (NYSE: RDY  ) have also pushed hard into emerging markets lately, and Dr. Reddy's in particular should benefit from its being headquartered in one of the industry's top locales.

Dr. Reddy’s Laboratories (NYSE: RDY) is one of the biggest players in generic drugs, offering more than 200 off-brand medications in the areas of cardiovascular disease, pain management and oncology, among others. In fact, this India-based company has become one of the largest makers of generics in the world, helping to drive more than 20 percent annual compounded earnings growth at the company over the past decade.

Prem Watsa is renowned for his long track record of outstanding returns using Buffett-style value investing through his worldwide insurance and reinsurance company, Toronto-based Fairfax Financial Holdings. His five-year cumulative is 176.4%, compared to 12.2% for the S&P 500. Most recently, he made headlines for making a large contrarian bet on Research In Motion (RIMM) and joining its board in his first activist investing foray. In the fourth quarter, he added to this position. He also added to his positions in Citigroup Inc. (C), Old Republic Corp. (ORI) and Johnson & Johnson (JNJ) and dramatically reduced one of his largest holdings, Dell (DELL). As a Ben Graham devotee, Watsa looks past short-term fluctuations in price to the underlying strength of a business. His stance on the economy, as of September and October 2011, was that he believed the U.S. was showing Depression-level interest rates and deficits, but he still liked some stocks and would hedge his exposure, he told CFA Institute Magazine.

The part I like the most is that WGL sells energy credits and carbon offsets to retail customers. The company makes good money on these elements, selling to customers who just like to feel good about how they are helping the environment. WGL has a long history as an energy company and has paid a dividend for 37 years. It currently pays 4.3% annually.

    Old Republic International (ORI)

The next of our dividend stocks is one you may have heard of: Old Republic International (ORI). Old Republic started back in 1887 and is an insurance company that offers a huge array of products. A lot of insurance products are very high margin, and Old Republic has mastered the art of selling these. Extended Automobile Warranty, Home Warranty an Travel Accident Insurance are great segments to be playing in.

10 Best Long Term Stocks To Buy Right Now

Coca-Cola's (NYSE: KO  ) managementwas "not happy" with the company's latest performance. And for good reason. Sales were down, and volume dropped in North America for the first time in 13 quarters. In the video below, Fool contributor Demitrios Kalogeropoulos says no. Demitrios gives three reasons for Coke shareholders to remain bullish on the company. He argues that increasing market share, a still-growing beverage portfolio, and cash returns to shareholders mean that Coke's investment value today is anything but flat.

The best investing approach is to choose great companies like Coca Cola and stick with them for the long term. So what: Revenue dropped 13.5% from a year ago to $153.7 million, but came in well ahead of the $142.2 million estimate. Earnings of $0.71 per share were also $0.05 ahead of estimates, so investors cheered a much needed good quarter.

  • [By Aaron Levitt]

At its core, CARBO Ceramics (CRR) manufactures synthetic proppants used in oil and gas drilling. The takeaway for E&P firms willing to cough up the extra bucks for rtificial sandis that they are able to squeeze out more natural gas and shale oil from wells using CRR products — about 20% more. That extra production, especially given the high price for oil, can mean the difference between whether a project is profitable or not.
