Mellanox Technologies (MLNX), a fabless semiconductor company, designs, manufactures and sells interconnect products and solutions. This stock closed up 6.1% at $36.67 in Monday's trading session.

    Monday's Volume: 751,000

    Three-Month Average Volume: 479,653

    Volume % Change: 65%

From a technical perspective, MLNX ripped sharply higher here right above its 50-day moving average of $33.57 with above-average volume. This big spike to the upside on Monday is quickly pushing shares of MLNX within range of triggering a near-term breakout trade. That trade will hit if MLNX manages to take out its 200-day moving average of $37.06 to some more near-term overhead resistance at $38.03 with high volume.

Traders should now look for long-biased trades in MLNX as long as it's trending above Monday's intraday low of $34.60 or above some more near-term support at $33.33 and then once it sustains a move or close above those breakout levels with volume that's near or above 479,653 shares. If that breakout begins soon, then MLNX will set up to re-test or possibly take out its next major overhead resistance levels at $40.80 to $44.14.

Mellanox Technologies (NASDAQ: MLNX) was also up, gaining 7.31 percent to $38.48 after the company announced general availability of MetroX solutions.

Top 5 Industrial Disributor Companies To Invest In Right Now

In spite of America's sweet tooth, the country is awash in sugar. So much so that the Agriculture Dept. wants to use a little-known portion of the 2008 Farm Bill to buy up surplus supplies to raise the commodity's price. At the same time, it will sell the surplus to ethanol producers at a loss. The likely big winner in all this? Monsanto (NYSE: MON  ) .

Big rock candy mountain
The U.S. produced 8-million metric tons of sugar last year, making it one of the world's largest producers. Of that amount, 55% of it was derived from sugar beets, of which Monsanto's genetically modified seeds own 95% of that portion.

The remaining 45% came from sugarcane. As the USDA notes,U.S. sugar prices have been well above world prices since 1982 because the government supports domestic sugar prices through loans to processors and a marketing allotment program.Lately, though, sugar has been selling at its lowest level in four years, which jeopardizes growers who've taken out loans from the USDA when prices were higher.Last week, the agency asked the Obama administration to allow it to buy hundreds of thousands of tons of sugar under a sugar-for-ethanol program called theFeedstock Flexibility Program. Since it's required by law to prop up sugar processors, it says that this is the cheapest way it can do it.

Market Turns Losses Into Record Highs Ahead of Yellen Grillin’

Like Sylvester Stallone in Rocky–or the plot of just any underdog film you can think of–the market started the day beaten down on its way to claiming the crown.

Agence France-Presse/Getty Images

The S&P 500 gained 0.8% to 1,782, after falling as much as 0.4% this morning, while the Dow Jones Industrial Average rose 0.5% to 15,821.63. Both were record highs, the S&P 500′s 34th this year, the Dow’s 36th.

The market was given a boost by Macy’s (M), which rose 9.4% to $50.68 after reporting stellar earnings, Pioneer Natural Resources (PXD), which gained 6.9% after it  announced that two of its oil wells had started chugging out crude, and General Motors (GM), which gained 4.9% to $38.44 after it announced that it would move its international headquarters to Singapore from Shanghai. PVH (PVH) and Cliff’s Natural Resources (CLF) both gained more than 4%.

Miller Tabak’s Andrew Wilkinson calls the market’s turnaround “pretty impressive.” He writes:

The index has rebounded to 1776.35 from an earlier low at 1760.64 and has engulfed Tuesday's range by piercing its low en route before surpassing its high…[With] the percentage of S&P 500 stocks trading new 52-week highs…at 6%, one could argue that the move is lacking fresh impetus, on the other it could signal that stocks not having made new peaks lately are behind the latest advance. At the time of the May and September record heights for stocks, the percentage of stocks rising to 52-week peaks was 31% and 26% respectively. At the end of October they reached 16%.

While there was little news to explain either this morning’s weakness or the afternoon’s move higher, that won’t be the case tomorrow. We’ll get jobless claims data. We’ll get the U.S. trade balance. And we’ll get Janet Yellen, whose opening remarks were released after the close, being grilled by the Senate on her way to replacing Ben Bernanke as head of the U.S. Federal Reserve. Jefferies’ Ward McCarthy offers his thoughts on what to expect:

Our expectation is that she will be very dovish regarding the "optimal" monetary policy for the current economic doldrums, but we also expect that she will not fit the media typecast of being a "serial dove." Yes, she will strongly defend the current highly accommodative monetary policy as being necessary and effective, and she will also defend the Fed actions that have taken monetary policy to the current state.

She will also be noncommittal if she is pushed to identify the timing of the initial tapering and the appropriate timing for the first firming of rate policy. The easy answer to those questions is to simply note that these decisions are up to the FOMC and the next Chairman, who has yet to be determined. Were these questions to be put to her as hypotheticals, it would increase the probability that we might learn quite a bit about Yellen's commitment to maintaining QE and extended rate guidance.

Still, the market is becoming convinced that tapering will begin soon. Consensus appears to be March; some believe it could be as soon as December. Treasury yields, for one, rose today, and Capital Economics’ John Higgins worries about the impact of rising bond yields on the stock market. He writes:

The earnings yield of a stock market index should be closely related to the average real yield of long-dated bonds issued by its constituents. In the US, we think the latter is likely to rise significantly during our forecast window. Although the gap between the earnings yield and the average real bond yield is currently more positive than usual, upward pressure on the latter is set to undermine the valuation case for equities over the next few years.

But what’s the next four years when we have so much to look forward to tomorrow?

Best Semiconductor Stocks To Own Right Now

From the Editor: Michael's "$1 Million Giveaway" starts at 1 p.m. ET tomorrow. So if you haven't registered for his free, members-only webinar, click here. And get ready to hear about an incredible ground-floor tech opportunity. In the meantime, here's why Michael is so willing to share his research with us...

So far this year, the average technology IPO has gained some 60% from its offering price, handing investors hundreds of millions in new wealth.

Of course, by just about any standard, that's a pretty impressive accomplishment in its own right.

But in my world, the world of Silicon Valley venture capitalists, 60% gains are a nice way to get started on the road to lasting wealth.

The truth is, when it comes to achieving the kind of life-changing gains most people only dream about, high-tech is the one area that investors can consistently count on over the long haul.

Just look at the hundreds of billions in new wealth created by the transistor, the Space Race, semiconductors, personal computers, the Internet, smartphones, and new biotech molecules.

Advisors' Opinion:
  • [By Geoff Gannon] on the amount of stock you can buy and the position size you like. For me, I try not to start buying a stock that I think will never make up 10% of my portfolio. If you don mind having 5% positions in your portfolio, your portfolio can obviously be twice as big as mine and you can still consider buying the same small stocks I do. In terms of specific stocks, it depends on the amount of float and the volume the stock trades in an average month. We are really getting into specifics here. And I may be boring people. But if you like to hear more about the minutiae of how you actually buy and sell tiny stocks like these, let me know, and Il do an article on the subject.

By the way, there is a hard and fast rule of thumb that it usually makes no sense to invest in a company with a market cap that is smaller than your portfolio. This is true for both fund and individual investors. Funds break it all the time. But, frankly, it is probably a waste of an analyst/fund manager time to even analyze such tiny positions relative to the size of the whole portfolio. Since even when we are discussing very small stocks we are still talking about millions and millions of dollars in market cap, this is hardly a concern for most individuals.

So, for individual investors, actual inability to acquire enough shares of a company to meaningful influence their portfolio is rarely the problem. If you bid for a stock month after month youl get your shares.

The concern for individual investors is not whether buying enough shares is possible. The concern is how quickly and easily you can buy and sell. This is what we call iquidity./p>

Instead of thinking about stocks as liquid or illiquid, you should think in terms of your portfolio and your liquidity needs. It doesn't make much sense to use what I'll call an "objective" (as in stock-oriented) approach to liquidity rather than a "subjective" (as in investor-oriented) approach to liquidity.

Solitron (SODI) sells at 74% of NCAV, has decent z- and f-scores, a FCF margin of 5.3% and an ROA of 12%.

Micropac (MPAD) sells at 83% of NCAV, has similar (slightly better) z- and f-scores, a FCF margin of 6%, but has ROA of 28%.

ADDvantage (AEY) sells at 95% of NCAV, has similar (in the ballpark) scores and FCF and ROA of 23%.

  • [By Geoff Gannon] strong>OPT-Sciences (OPST)

    Micropac

Micropac is 76% owned by Heinz-Werner Hempel. He a German businessman. You can see the German company he founded here. He had control of Micropac for a long-time. I don have an exact number in front of me. But I would guess it been something like 25 years.

    ADDvantage

ADDvantage Technologies is controlled by the Chymiak brothers. See the company April 4 press release explaining their decision to turn over the CEO position to an outsider. Regardless, the Chymiaks still control 47% of the company. Ken Chymiak is now chairman. And David Chymiak is still a director and now the company chief technology officer. Clearly, it still their company.

By the way, the name ADDvantage Technologies has nothing to do with the Chymiaks. Today AEY really traces its roots to a private company called Tulsat. The Chymiak brothers acquired that company about 27 years ago. So, effectively, when you buy shares of AEY you are buying into a 27-year-old family-controlled company.

That pretty typical in the world of net-nets.

    Solitron

Solitron Devices is 29% owned by Shevach Saraf. He has been the CEO for 20 years. The post-bankruptcy Solitron has never known another CEO. Before the bankruptcy, Solitron was a much bigger, much different company. So even though we are not talking about the founder here and even though 70% of the company shares are not held by the CEO wee still talking about a company where one person has a lot of control. Solitron only has three directors. Saraf is the chairman, CEO, president, CFO and treasurer. Neither of the other two directors joined the board within the last 15 years. So, we aren talking about a lot of tumult at the top.

In fact, profitable net-nets seem to be especially common candidates for abandoning the responsibilities of a public company without actually getting taken private.

Despite being a relatively new entrant into the smartphone and tablet market, NVIDIA has been well accepted. Year-over-year growth in 2012 was mostly flat, with the company transitioning from its Tegra 3 to next-generation Tegra 4 chips, but that's still a lot better than I can say for some of its peers. Intel (NASDAQ: INTC  ) , a company that I think has a strong future tied to smartphone and tablet hardware as well as cloud computing, saw its market share tick up by just 0.2% in 2012, according to Strategy Analytics. Furthermore, Broadcom (NASDAQ: BRCM  ) , which has significantly more market share than NVIDIA, will slowly cede that share over time in the U.S., since its processing chips are often found in older 3G-capable smartphones. Broadcom may find a lot of success overseas, but I'd say its smartphone market share is only set to tumble in the United States.

Ashraf Eassa: I've been bullish on chip maker Broadcom (NASDAQ: BRCM  ) for quite a while now. Although some investors might be disappointed that the company wasn't able to become the mobile processor powerhouse that the company itself had hoped, the remaining business continues to be incredibly compelling.

Semiconductor and Component Test Systems Segment

Semiconductor and component test systems are used during the semiconductor and electronic component manufacturing process to confirm that a semiconductor functions properly. Semiconductor and component test systems consist of test systems for memory semiconductors and test systems for non memory semiconductors. Advantest test systems for memory semiconductors are test systems designed to test high-speed/high performance dynamic random access memory (DRAM) semiconductors used in equipment such as personal computers and servers, as well as flash memory semiconductors used in digital consumer products.

Test systems for memory semiconductors consist of a mainframe and one or more test heads. During testing, a device interface is attached to the test head. During the front-end testing process, wafers are loaded by a prober and are connected to the test system for memory semiconductors through the device interface. Electric signals between the die and the test systems for memory semiconductors are transmitted through probe pins located in the device interface and tested. After front-end te! sting is completed, the wafer is diced into separate dies and properly functioning dies are packaged. During back-end testing, test handlers are used to load these packaged devices onto the test heads, and electric signals are transmitted between the devices and the test heads via the device interface and tested. The test results are analyzed by the test systems for memory semiconductorshardware circuits and software programs. Customized software programs for each semiconductor are required to analyze the semiconductor tests and test data.
