Sometimes Wall Street feels like it’s stuck in Ender’s Game, the sci-fi flick opening about group of children are trained to defend the earth from deadly aliens in what can only be described as a kill or be killed scenario. The market is either surging higher, the bulls say, or it’s a bubble waiting to pop, according to the bears.
Summit EntertainmentNeither, of course, happened this week as the Dow Jones Industrial Average rose just 0.3% to 15,615.55, while the S&P 500 gained 0.1% to 1,761.764.
But that didn’t stop the prognosticators on either end of the spectrum from, well, prognosticating, sometimes from within the same shop. Merrill Lynch’s head of U.S. equity and quantitative strategy Savita Subramanian, for instance, said that the investment bank’s sell-side indicator was at a level that suggests the odds favor a rising market during the next 12 months, perhaps as much as 19%. Merrill Lynch chief investment strategist Michael Hartnett, however, said that if investors put another $8 billion or so of cash into stock funds during the next two weeks that “would trigger a contrarian ‘sell signal.’” The note was called “It’s Getting Frothy, Man!”

This royalty business model of Franco-Nevada Gold (FNV) is a winner, especially in this environment, since Franco-Nevada avoids various risks associated with developing and operating gold mines.

The names, yeah, I'll give some names, and, of course, everything depends, I mean, all the qualifications, it depends on the person and depends on the price when you go to buy, but you know, I love a company like Franco-Nevada (FNV) which is a royalty company; it's the largest of the royalty companies.

Despite recent trouble in making fare hikes stick, airlines have done a great job of boosting fee income and posting solid bottom-line earnings lately. Moreover, United Continental's announcement today that it will pioneer the commercial use of the Split Scimitar winglet design in a retrofit of its fleet of 737-800 aircraft. Advisors' Opinion:- [By Russ Koesterich]
The list above is based on my team's analysis of whether sector valuations appropriately price in each sector's expected earnings growth, profitability and risk. Based on these factors, I have a preference for the energy and informational technology sectors, accessible through the iShares S&P Global Energy Sector Fund (IXC) and the iShares S&P Global Technology Sector Fund (IXN). And as I write in my new Investment Directions commentary piece, if it turns out that we do see more investors rotating out of defensives and into more attractively priced cyclicals, these two sectors are poised to especially benefit.
