Top 10 Railroad Companies To Buy Right Now

On this day in economic and business history...

Jay Cooke & Company failed on Sept. 18, 1873, triggering a financial panic that soon plunged the United States into a "Great Depression." This depression remained the national benchmark for economic woe for decades before the 1930s took over that term.

The basic backstory of this failure should be familiar: A major financier invests heavily into a speculative bubble -- in this case, railroads -- and uses excessive leverage to maximize returns while everything moves in the right direction. Then the bubble pops, and the financier is left without the means to pay back creditors. A sudden lack of liquidity cascades through the financial system as everyone rushes to withdraw money, only to find that in many cases their profits or their savings exist only as notations in their bank's records. Everybody panic!

The particulars of 1873, however, make it worth a closer investigation.

The boom leading up to the 1873 panic was the first true "tech" bubble, driven entirely by the excitement surrounding a promising new industry, rather than by real-estate speculation, trade imbalances, or financial shenanigans. (A boom preceding the Panic of 1857 also involved railroads, but this earlier bubble was driven in large part by Midwestern land speculation.)

Top 10 Railroad Companies To Buy Right Now: Transcept Pharmaceuticals Inc.(TSPT)

Transcept Pharmaceuticals, Inc., a specialty pharmaceutical company, focuses on the development and commercialization of proprietary products that address therapeutic needs in the field of neuroscience. Its principal product is the Intermezzo, a low dose sublingual formulation of zolpidem as a sleep aid for use in the middle of the night at the time a patient awakens and has difficulty returning to sleep. It is also developing TO-2061, a low dose ondansetron adjunctive therapy, which is in Phase II study for patients with obsessive-compulsive disorder. The company was founded in 2002 and is based in Point Richmond, California.

Advisors' Opinion:
  • [By Roberto Pedone]

Transcept Pharmaceuticals (TSPT) is a specialty pharmaceutical company focused on the development and commercialization of proprietary products that address important therapeutic needs in neuroscience. This stock closed up 6% to $2.98 in Thursday's trading session.

    Thursday's Range: $2.81-$2.99

    52-Week Range: $2.77-$6.77

    Thursday's Volume: 138,000

    Three-Month Average Volume: 158,095

From a technical perspective, TSPT spiked sharply higher here right above some near-term support at $2.77 and back above its 50-day moving average at $2.95 with decent upside volume. This move is quickly pushing shares of TSPT within range of triggering a major breakout trade. That trade will hit if TSPT manages to take out some near-term overhead resistance levels at $3.16 to $3.25 with high volume. If that breakout hits, it would also push TSPT outside of a large consolidation pattern the stock has been in for the last three months.

Traders should now look for long-biased trades in TSPT as long as it's trending above some key near-term support at $2.77 and then once it sustains a move or close above those breakout levels with volume that hits near or above 158,095 shares. If that breakout triggers soon, then TSPT will set up to re-test or possibly take out its next major overhead resistance levels at $4.23 to its 200-day moving average at $4.50. Any high-volume move above those levels will then put $4.89 to $5 into range for shares of TSPT.

  • [By Roberto Pedone]

An under-$10 biotech stock that's trending very close to triggering a near-term breakout trade is Transcept Pharmaceuticals (TSPT), which is focused on the development and commercialization of proprietary products that address important therapeutic needs in neuroscience. This stock has been hit hard by the bears so far in 2013, with shares off by 36%.

If you take a look at the chart for TSPT, you'll notice that this stock has been trending sideways inside of a big consolidation pattern for the last three months, with shares moving between $2.71 on the downside and $3.25 on the upside. Shares of TSPT are counter-trending higher today in the face of a very weak tape. This move is starting to push the stock within range of triggering a near-term breakout trade above the upper-end of its sideways trading chart pattern.

Traders should now look for long-biased trades in TSPT if it manages to break out above its 50-day moving average at $2.91 a share and then once it takes out more near-term overhead resistance levels at $3.16 to $3.25 a share with high volume. Look for a sustained move or close above those levels with volume that hits near or above its three-month average action of 138,444 shares. If that breakout triggers soon, then TSPT will set up to re-test or possibly take out its next major overhead resistance levels at $4.23 to its 200-day at $4.39 a share. If those levels get taken out with volume, then TSPT could easily hit its next major overhead resistance levels at $5 to $5.50 a share.

Traders can look to buy TSPT off weakness to anticipate that breakout and simply use a stop that sits right below its recent low of $2.71 a share. One can also buy TSPT off strength once it clears those breakout levels with volume and then simply use a stop that sits a comfortable percentage from your entry point.

Advisors' Opinion:
  • [By James Johnson]

CytRx Corporation's (NASDAQ: CYTR  ) oncology drug, aldoxorubicin, an improved version of the chemotherapeutic agent doxorubicin, recently received FDA approval to extend the dosing in a Phase 3 clinical trial. This trial is evaluating aldoxorubicin as a second-line treatment for soft-tissue sarcomas (STS). In April 2013, the FDA granted Special Protocol Assessment (SPA) to aldoxorubicin as a second-line treatment for STS with a maximum dosing of six cycles. The drug is given by a 30 minute IV infusion once every three weeks which is one cycle. The extension of the treatment cycle was based on aldoxorubicin's superior cardiac safety and efficacy profile compared to doxorubicin in prior studies. Aldoxorubicin was found to be safer than doxorubicin, a toxic drug associated with side effects such as cardiovascular events and heart damage in cancer patients. The extended dosing could allow CytRx to demonstrate even higher progression-free survival (PFS) efficacy results compared to the Phase 2b trial for advanced STS with this drug. The company plans to initiate the Phase 3 trial during the first quarter of 2014.

  • [By Seth Jayson]

    Basic guidelines
In this series, I examine inventory using a simple rule of thumb: Inventory increases ought to roughly parallel revenue increases. If inventory bloats more quickly than sales grow, this might be a sign that expected sales haven't materialized. Is the current inventory situation at Encore Wire (Nasdaq: WIRE  ) out of line? To figure that out, start by comparing the company's inventory growth to sales growth. How is Encore Wire doing by this quick checkup? At first glance, not so great. Trailing-12-month revenue decreased 9.2%, and inventory increased 0.3%. Comparing the latest quarter to the prior-year quarter, the story looks decent. Revenue grew 3.9%, and inventory expanded 0.3%. Over the sequential quarterly period, the trend looks healthy. Revenue dropped 4.1%, and inventory dropped 5.1%.

Former Philadelphia Fed President Edward Boehne elegantly described the approach at a Federal Open Market Committee (FOMC) meeting in late 1989:

ow, sooner or later, we will have a recession. I don think anybody around the table wants a recession or is seeking one, but sooner or later we will have one. If in that recession we took advantage of the anti-inflation (impetus) and we got inflation down from 4 1/2 percent to 3 percent, and then in the next expansion we were able to keep inflation from accelerating, sooner or later there will be another recession out there. And so, if we could bring inflation down from cycle to cycle just as we let it build up from cycle to cycle, that would be considerable progress over what wee done in other periods in history./p>

Advisors' Opinion:
  • [By Rich Duprey]

Part of the problem is the changing tastes of consumers. In addition to craft beer's popularity, hard ciders and teas are gaining popularity, too. Boston Beersaw depletions grow 16% last quarter primarily because of the emphasis it placed on its Angry Orchard cider and Twisted Teas, and Bud recently introduced its Stella Artois Cidre brand. Last year, bothSABMiller and Molson Coors (NYSE: TAP  ) acquiredcider maker Crispin through their MillerCoors joint venture.

  • [By Holly LaFon]

The other one was Molson Coors Brewing (TAP).

Oh yeah, again, theye really cheap. Theye the oldest brewer in North America, and the stock is running about 10-11 times earnings with a very strong balance sheet. If you look at what Heineken is bidding for Asia Pacific Breweries (15-17 times cash flow), Molson looks like a bargain. The company has been innovative in coming out with new products, especially in the craft beer area. Their customer base is mostly unemployed, so that kind of the problem. But usually if we can buy a beverage company at 10x earnings, wee pretty patient. Historically it been a pretty good entry point.

With a price to earnings ratio of 123.57, it is clear investors are expecting higher growth from this stock than its competitors, whose price to earnings ratio are twice as half. I think it will not take very long for the stock to appreciate in value at a much higher rate due to higher revenue, good investor and market sentiment towards the stock, and an improved real estate market.

3 Ways to Retire Early

There may be nothing more in keeping with the American Dream than achieving a level of financial security that allows for early retirement. Yet most people fall short of that goal. In a bid to change that, three of The Motley Fool's analysts share their best ideas on how to retire early. Read on to learn what they suggest.

Leo Sun
The key to retiring early is to start saving as early as you can.

A Forbes analysis revealed that if people started saving 10% to 15% of their annual income at the age of 20 to 25, they were generally able to retire comfortably (i.e., with their current living standards) by their late 60s. For those who wait until age 40 to start a savings account, that percentage soars to 43.2%. But if a person can save up 30% to 40% of their annual income at the age of 25 -- which might be achieved by scoring a high-paying job, living frugally, or working overseas -- an early retirement could be a realistic goal.

Those alarming figures highlight the importance of contributing to your Roth IRA and building up a stock/fund portfolio as early as possible. Maxing out your annual Roth IRA contributions and your 401(k) contributions, then investing the remainder in well-researched stocks or mutual funds could pave the way toward an early retirement.

That plan doesn't take into account student debt, job changes, or family emergencies. But the key takeaway is to constantly have an annual savings percentage in mind and to strive to meet that goal every year.

Matt Frankel
If you want to retire as early as possible, it's important to take advantage of the retirement savings options available to you, such as your 401(k), IRA, or other tax-advantaged retirement account.

For the 2015 tax year, the IRS will allow you $18,000 in elective 401(k) contributions (or $24,000 if you're 50 or older), which doesn't include any employer match or mandatory contributions. And you can save an additional $5,500 ($6,500 if you're 50 or older) in a traditional or Roth IRA. If you're self-employed, there are several other tax-advantaged options to you, such as a SIMPLE IRA, SEP-IRA, or individual 401(k) plan, so look into those options if they're available to you.

Just to put the power of these accounts and their tax-free compounding into perspective, consider that if you max out your IRA and 401(k) contributions ($23,500 per year) and achieve 8% average annual returns on your investments -- a realistic return, given that the S&P 500 has averaged 9.4% over the past 20 years -- you'll have over $1 million in just 20 years. After 27 years, you'll hit the $2 million mark. And these returns don't even consider any additional 401(k) contributions from your employer.

So, by contributing as much as possible to the tax-advantaged retirement accounts available to you, you can achieve early retirement more easily than you may think.

Best Restaurant Stocks To Buy Right Now

Dan Caplinger
As both Matt and Leo point out, investing as much as you can as early as possible will certainly improve your odds of being able to retire early. But the part of the equation that many people never address is clamping down on your expenses as much as possible, getting any debt you've incurred paid down as soon as possible, and then setting aside as much of your paychecks as you can to go toward your investment accounts.

Learning to live with less has a dual benefit in terms of retiring early. Not only will you be able to save more, but you won't need as large of a nest egg to support a more modest standard of living than you would if you had more expensive tastes.

How best to achieve reduced expenses varies from person to person. Some people are comfortable living in lower-cost areas of the country or moving to different places across the globe that are more affordable. But you don't have to make extreme moves in order to save more. In many cases, simply being mindful of the money you spend every day will put you in a position to make painless cuts that will leave you with more to put toward savings -- and thereby hasten the day you can retire for good.

Part of the Android forking strategy necessitates operating a separate content storefront, shunning Google's official repository. Amazon's Appstore for Android serves precisely this purpose. However, there's also another bookselling Android rebel that's been having less tablet success by forking the platform, a rival that just surrendered to Google: Barnes & Noble (NYSE: BKS  ) .

  • [By Johanna Bennett]

Barnes & Noble (BKS) sank almost 6% to close at $15.45. A bigger-than-expected drop in fiscal second-quarter revenue offset a profit rise fueled by cost cuts.

  • [By Teresa Rivas]

Shares of Barnes & Noble (BKS) were falling before the close Thursday, on news that John Malones Liberty Media (LMCA) is selling most of its 17% stake in the bookseller.

Liberty Media reached an agreement with Barnes & Noble to sell 90% holdings, which will result in the loss of one of its two board se! ats. The ! shares are being purchased by institutional investors, with the sale expected to close next week.

As The Wall Street Journal reports, Liberty didnt say how much it was selling the share for, but the move comes after Barnes & Noble has enjoyed a big rally, climbing 66% since February through yesterdays close. A person close to the deal says that the price was higher than $250 million, which would give Liberty a good deal of profit, as it paid $204 million for the entire stake in 2011. Its also been earning a fixed dividend on the preferred shares: The anonymous source pegs a return of more than20% on the investment.

Meanwhile, one of the worst-performing stocks in the broader market today is Barnes & Noble (NYSE: BKS  ) , down more than 17%. The ailing bookseller announced its fiscal fourth-quarter earnings today, revealing just how much trouble it's in. Revenue in its Nook division fell by 34% for the quarter, while same-store sales dropped 8.8%. In response, the company said it will stop producing the tablet versions of its Nook product line.

So for investors looking those levels or more, Halliburton (HAL) and Tenaris (TS) could be the option. That doesn't mean you should rush headfirst into any old Japanese stock on the hopes of a nationwide surge; as with all investing, picking the best stocks is the way to go. The country's top exporters have seen their stock rise and fall with the yen's volatility, but leading manufacturers such as Kubota (NASDAQOTH: KUBTY  ) and Komatsu (NASDAQOTH: KMTUY  ) are poised to ride a weaker yen higher to better compete against foreign rivals.

  • [By Dan Carroll]

Fellow Japanese manufacturer Komatsu's (NASDAQOTH: KMTUY  ) shares have slid more than 3% this past month, but like Kubota, this stock has blown up in 2013 and could be headed higher with a win by Abe and the LDP. However, there's risk in Komatsu's lofty 45% profit growth outlook in 2013: The company's the top manufacturer in China, but given the current slowdown plaguing the second-largest economy on Earth, Komatsu investors could be left disappointed. Komatsu's likely to see a strong uptick for the full year due to the weak yen -- particularly if Abe moves more aggressively after the elections -- but China's slump could make meeting optimistic projections a tall order.

Why Workers Sign Up for Social Security at Age 62

Black businesswoman smiling in office Getty ImagesMany workers claim Social Security as soon as possible, but they might regret that decision later. The most popular age to sign up for Social Security is 62, with 32 percent of men and 38 percent of women born in 1946 claiming benefits at that age. Starting benefits at age 62 provides valuable retirement income as soon as possible, but it also triggers a reduction in monthly payments because retirees collect them over a longer period of time. A 62-year-old who signs up for Social Security in 2014 will get 25 percent smaller checks than if he waited to claim at age 66, his full retirement age. Here's why many retirees claim Social Security at 62, even though it results in significantly smaller monthly payments. Already out of the workforce. People who are unemployed at age 62 and unable to find a new job often sign up for Social Security to bring some income into the household. "Some people who did not plan to sign up at age 62 may have experienced a job loss during a bad economy, and they need the income," says Andy Landis, author of "Social Security: The Inside Story." Those who are employed full time between ages 60 and 62 are 30 percent less likely to claim Social Security early than those who no longer work full time, according to a new Government Accountability Office report. "Many unemployed older workers struggle to find new jobs and may face unique re-employment challenges, such as employer reluctance to hire older workers or out-of-date skills. And, long-term unemployment can motivate older workers to claim early Social Security," according to the report. A strenuous job. People who work in physically demanding jobs including mechanics, construction, precision production, operators and farming are 55 percent more likely to claim Social Security benefits early than workers in other fields, GAO found. Those in managerial and professional jobs are 32 percent less likely to sign up early than other occupations. Workers without a college degree were also 23 percent more likely to claim early.

    SolarCity (NASDAQ: SCTY  )
You know how I'm a staunch advocate for profitability?... Well, throw that out the window just this once!

  • [By Paul Ausick]

Solar makers like First Solar Inc. (NASDAQ: FSLR) and SunPower Corp. (NASDAQ: SPWR) have come to depend on their project businesses to help offset the declining costs of solar modules. SolarCity Corp. (NASDAQ: SCTY) has recently made two acquisitions that increase their vertical integration in the solar installation market. For the moment at least, going vertical seems to be the path to whatever profits exist in the solar market.

  • [By Chris Katje]

Shares of SolarCity (SCTY) shot up 11% on Thursday after a new financing deal from Goldman Sachs (GS). SolarCity, which provides solar panels to homes and businesses, will be able to secure additional customers and blow past its guidance for installed products.

Advisors' Opinion:

Shares of energy crop developer Ceres (NASDAQ: CERE  ) surged more than 100% from the opening bell Monday to early trading on Thursday. In fact, over one-third of the total outstanding shares traded hands on Thursday. Even with the move the company is trading for "only" $100 million. With some of the biggest names in industrial biotech on its side -- such as Syngenta (NYSE: SYT  ) , Petrobras, Amyris, Valero, Novozymes, Gruppo M&G, and Mascoma, to name a few -- this must be a good buy right? Not so fast.

  • [By James E. Brumley]

Despite the fact that markets are right around breakeven levels for Wednesday, there are relatively few stocks that are up today, and even fewer that are up on strong volume. For the NYSE, 54% of its listed equities are in the red this morning, and 58% of the total volume seen so far has been bearish volume. That's what makes Ceres Inc. (NASDAQ:CERE) so interesting early Wednesday. As one of the few tickers that's not only up, but up on higher volume, CERE is a standout worth a closer look. And, that closer look reveals something even more compelling about the way things are coming together for this small cap stock.

  • [By Roberto Pedone]

Another renewable energy player that looks ready to trigger a big breakout trade is Ceres (CERE), which sells seeds to produce renewable biomass feedstocks that can enable the large-scale replacement of petroleum and other fossil fuels. This stock has been hammered by the bears so far in 2013, with shares off sharply by 66%.

If you take a look at the chart for Ceres, you'll notice that this stock has just started to trend back above its 50-day moving average of $1.45 a share with heavy upside volume flows. Volume so far today has already registered over 1.15 million shares, which is well above its three-month average action of 670,538 shares. This spike back above its 50-day is now quickly pushing shares of CERE within range of triggering a big breakout trade.

Traders should now look for long-biased trades in CERE if it manages to break out above some near-term overhead resistance levels at $1.67 to $1.68 a share with high volume. Look for a sustained move or close above those levels with volume that hits near or above its three-month average action of 670,538 shares. If that breakout hits soon, then CERE will set up to re-test or possibly take out its next major overhead resistance levels at $2 to $2.50 a share. Shares of CERE could even tag $3 if this breakout triggers with strong volume.

Traders can look to buy CERE off any weakness to anticipate that breakout and simply use a stop that sits right below $1.40 a share. One could also buy CERE off strength once it takes out those breakout levels with volume and then simply use a stop that sits a comfortable percentage from your entry point.

He believes several companies have set the bar precipitously low to start the year despite targeted developments expected to occur before the start of 2014. Watch the following video for his thoughts on potential positive surprises awaiting investors inAmyris (NASDAQ: AMRS  ) ,BioAmber (NYSE: BIOA  ) ,Codexis (NASDAQ: CDXS  ) , andSolazyme (NASDAQ: SZYM  ) .

Synthetic biology and renewable oils manufacturerSolazyme (NASDAQ: SZYM  ) announced that it successfully conducted multiple initial fermentations in 500,000 liter fermentors in December 2012. While it was a big step forward in the right direction, I think the announcement was a bit premature. By "multiple," the company meant two and by "commercial scale production metrics," the company meant that only partial data had been collected. By reading SEC filings, investors can learn that the company has yet to prove microbial productivity at volumes greater than 128,000 liters. Not at all a nail in the coffin, but since the company believes it needs to reach 625,000 liter fermentors to be profitable, it is clear that engineers have plenty of work ahead of them.

  • [By Monica Gerson]

Solazyme (NASDAQ: SZYM) dipped 12.46% to $9.06 on Q3 results.

PhotoMedex (NASDAQ: PHMD) shares dropped 12.09% to $11.27 in pre-market trading after the company reported weaker-than-expected third-quarter results.

    Don't forget about...
Gevo may be a promising renewable fuel partner for Uncle Sam, but it isn't the only one. Solazyme (NASDAQ: SZYM  ) began extensive testing on three of its fuels -- two renewable diesels and one renewable jet fuel -- with the U.S. Navy in 2009. The company supplied 600,000 gallons of fuels between 2011 and 2012 under various programs. Similarly, Amyris (NASDAQ: AMRS  ) is working with DARPA under The Living Foundries program to build a quickly scalable industrial biotechnology platform. While it could one day be used for fuels or chemicals, vaccines or nutritionals, such a breakthrough would certainly catch the eye of the petroleum-guzzling DoD. Outside of the project, the company is working toward supplying commercial quantities of renewable jet fuel with partner Total by 2014 and already supplies renewable diesel in Brazil.

The so-called fundamentals, frankly, don't really matter for Entest BioMedical Inc. (OTCMKTS:ENTB) or Gevo, Inc. (NASDAQ:GEVO). Oh, both GEVO and ENTB are generating sales, but both are consistently taking losses. That's ok though, as for both companies right now, profits aren't really the point - it's the pipeline that matters.

It was already hanging by a thread, and then only because it bounced back from an early-November plunge. But, with the action we've seen from Gevo, Inc.
