Top 10 Telecom Stocks To Own For 2014

A background in finance is sure to lead to money, but what if you want more than money? If you believe that finance can be used to engineer more than just profits, then a career in social finance may be right for you.

What Is Social Finance?
Social finance is the application of finance to achieve a social objective. Long the focus of governments and charities, social finance has now become a specialized field of finance and an area of focus for profit-seeking corporations.

Many different kinds of organizations seek better methods to reach and serve those in the lowest socio-economic groups. Banks, consumer finance companies, retailers, non-profit organizations and even telecom companies are just a few examples. Although their embrace of the world's lower income population may appear similar, organizations often differ in their intentions. Some seek the elimination of poverty as a social good, others seek to create new pools of consumers for their products. Some seek to do both.

Advisors' Opinion:
  • [By Doug Young]

I've been writing about the VNO development for awhile now, as it's really quite exciting with the potential to instantly triple the number of telecoms service providers in the market from the current three to a new field of 8-9 operators. Equally important, most of those new operators, which would lease network capacity from the existing three telcos, are private sector firms. That means they should be much more nimble and innovative than the current monopoly of three big state-run companies, China Mobile, China Unicom (CHU) and China Telecom (CHA).

Sprint received the lowest score of 59, faring the worst in terms of value, voice, text and 4G services. T-Mobile US (TMUS) rated 65 and AT&T (T) 64, according to survey results released Thursday. The rankings are based on ratings for voice, text and 4G, taking into account the occurrence of problems and adjusted for frequency of use. Sprint has been revamping its network after years of customer losses. The company, which is 80 percent owned by SoftBank, warned in October that customer defections would remain high in coming quarters. The company reported a decline in third-quarter revenue as it lost more subscribers than expected following the shutdown of its older network. "Our latest cell service satisfaction survey revealed a somewhat precipitous decline by Sprint that shuffled the rankings of the major standard service providers," Glenn Derene, Electronics Content Development Team Leader for Consumer Reports, said in a statement.

Best Sliver Companies For 2014

Synovus Financial (NYSE: SNV  ) throws its hat into the earnings ring early Tuesday, and investors are facing a big question: Will CEO Kessel D. Stelling and crew deliver good news? Or should investors be wary of less than impressive results?

Beware, Fool!
Analysts are expecting the Atlanta-based bank to report earnings of $0.02 per share on $272.7 million in revenues. Should the bank meet these modest expectations, it would be right in line with what the bank did during the first quarter of last year, providing a bit of stability to a bank that hasn't exactly been a strong performer recently.

SNV data by YCharts.

The bank's fourth-quarter results were less than stellar, with net income of $712.8 million driven mostly by a one-time income tax benefit and the sale of some distressed assets. The bank shouldn't have similar events to rely on during the first quarter, placing bottom- and top-line success squarely on the actual performance of the bank. Hopefully, the bank will surprise, but I am not holding my breath.

In December 2013, the Company sold Flexjet's activities to Flexjet, LLC. Advisors' Opinion:
  • [By Adam Levine-Weinberg]

Yet there is a fourth major competitor in the commercial aircraft market -- Bombardier (NASDAQOTH: BDRAF  ) -- and it has its own advanced-technology airplane. The company's CSeries plane is expected to make its first flight as early as this week. Yet the CSeries put up a goose egg at the Paris Air Show, failing to notch a single order. While Bombardier has nearly 200 firm orders for the CSeries, the company will rapidly burn through that backlog once it starts CSeries mass production.

Advisors' Opinion:
  • [By Kyle Woodley]

The short, sucky answer? A lot:

Plans for a igafactorymeant to produce millions of electric-car batteries ginned up excitement, but also raised eyebrows. The Wall Street Journal reported on skepticism in the space — including from heads at Volkswagen (VLKAY) and battery maker Highpower International (HPJ). Now, even planned investment partner Panasonic (PC) now sounds iffy on the project, with company Kazuhiro Tsuga saying “the investment risk is definitely larger.” Not good. There also was Tesla direct sales snafu. New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie huffed and puffed and (on March 11) successfully blew down Tesla direct sales model, with the Motor Vehicle Commission approving a measure to enforce an already-existing ban on direct sales. On the flip side, Tesla has scored victories in New York and Ohio in the past month, and is making progress in Arizona (which has a little incentive on the board). Production of the Model X has been pushed further back, to 2015. Musk’s reasons — mostly having to do with focusing on bolstering Model S sales — are valid, but that doesn really soften the blow of a longer wait for the much-anticipated addition to Tesla line. To address the issue of battery fires in the Model S, TSLA added titanium shields and aluminum deflector plates to new vehicles and offered to install them for free in all its existing cars. Tesla margins are excellent, and there no hard number on the cost impact of the fix, but titanium ain cheap. This definitely isn going to add to Tesla bottom line. What Now?

I won belabor you with my bullish position on TSLA stock, but if you want, you can see it here. In short, Musk is a genius; Tesla products are quality and appeal to (and are priced for) the all-important luxury segment; and just given size and scale, TSLA has oh-so-much room to grow.

Advisors' Opinion:

CenturyLink (CTL) has been a great stock to hold for investors in 2014. The stock has appreciated more than 22% YTD and the company is taking many steps to move forward. So the question is, will CenturyLink continue to reward investors or should investors take profits off the! table? Let's take a look.

  • [By Ben Levisohn]

Shares of CenturyLink (CTL) have dropped more than 2% today on reports that it’s trying to buy cloud-computing company Rackspace Hosting (RAX).

    ZUMAPRESS.com

Bloomberg has the details on the potential transaction:

CenturyLink has discussed the idea with San Antonio-based Rackspace, which last month said it is still conducting an internal review of its strategic options, according to the people, who asked not to be identified talking about private information. One person said a deal may not be reached for the company, which had a stock-market valuation of $5.33 billion at the end of last week.

Citigroup’s Michael Rollins thinks a deal will depend on valuation:

Valuation matters. We believe CenturyLink can financially digest a possible acquisition of Rackspace under $50 per share based on our scenario analysis. We believe CenturyLink could pay for Rackspace using up to 50% in cash to keep net debt financial leverage near or below 3x on our pro forma analysis. While PF FV/OIBDA may not move substantially paying up to $50/share, we estimate FCF/share and norm. EPS could be diluted by up to (11%) in the first year. Based on our initial analysis, we would take a neutral view for a possible buyout under $40 per share, but believe CenturyLink shares could trade lower if it were to pay more than $50 for Rackspace. We remain Neutral on CenturyLink largely based on valuation.

Shares of CenturyLink have dropped 2.2% to $40.55 at 1:18 p.m., while Rackspace has gained 5% to $39.10.

Corbis Providing landline connectivity is a fading business, with more and more folks saving money by disconnecting their home phone plans, relying primarily on smartphones. It's a grim trend that would make this a scary area for shareholders, but good luck trying to tell income-chasing investors to stay away. Despite their dubious growth prospects, Frontier Com! municatio! ns (FTR), CenturyLink (CTL) and Windstream (WIN) have been attracting investors based of the strength of their generous quarterly distributions. Frontier and Windstream -- and to a lesser extent CenturyLink -- have tried to go where the big boys won't. They concentrate on smaller markets where traditional phone services are still in demand, and they don't have to compete as hard with the titans of telco. It's an interesting strategy. It has long-term flaws, but the three stocks are still magnetic to investors that put up with the shortcomings in exchange for fat dividend checks every three months. Yield Signs How meaty are the disbursements here? CenturyLink yields 5.9 percent, and it's at the low end of the niche. Windstream is the most generous payer with a hefty 9.9 percent payout. Frontier straddles the two with its 7 percent yield. All three reported quarterly results this week, giving the market some valuable insight on the sustainability of their popular distributions. It's important to remember that these three companies aren't merely selling landlines. You don't stick around if you're only selling buggy whips, Beanie Babies and Milli Vanillii CDs. Frontier, CenturyLink and Windstream are trying to offset the folks canceling their home phone lines and millennials who have no intention of ever having them by selling more relevant broadband connectivity. They also offer businesses a growing array of corporate communication services. For the most part, these efforts haven't been enough to grow the overall business. Frontier kicked off the three days of earnings reports on Tuesday, che

Getty Images Despite claims to the contrary from credit agencies and identity protection services, if you're the victim of identity theft, ultimately, you're on your own. I learned that firsthand. So let me tell what you need to know, including some decidedly low-tech tips to protect yourself from an identity theft threat you probably never considered. Recently, as I was going through the mail, I found a letter welcoming my wife as a new AT&T (T) customer. This struck me as odd since both my wife and I had been using a different carrier for more than 10 years. The letter indicated that my wife had opened an account with AT&T mobile and that she had purchased five iPhones and two iPads. "Honey," I yelled. "I think we have a problem." And we did. After contacting AT&T, we found out that someone, using my wife's information, had gone into one of its retail stores, opened an account in her name, purchased numerous items and walked out. After I informed AT&T that this was a case of fraud, the company immediately closed the account, informed us that we would not liable for the purchases and said it would remove the inquiries from my wife's credit report. A Second! Theft N! o harm, no foul, I reasoned, making a mental note to sign up with the credit protection service LifeLock (LOCK). However, before I could, we received a letter from T-Mobile (TMUS). Yes, you guessed it, welcoming my wife as a new customer. The identity thieves had done the same thing. Again, T-Mobile was great, canceling the account and telling us we were not liable. However, now I knew we had a serious issue. I immediately called LifeLock and signed up myself, my wife and our two minor children to its service. I signed up my kids because a common variation on the identity theft scam is to steal and use the Social Security numbers of minors. It's only years later, when your child first uses their number to apply for credit, perhaps for a student loan or to buy their first car, th

Most airlines hedge the price of fuel to reduce price volatility. Not American Airlines (AAL) or Allegiant Travel (ALGT), Morgan Stanley says, making them the two clearest beneficiaries of lower oil prices.

5 Tech Stocks Spiking on Unusual Volume

DELAFIELD, Wis. (Stockpickr) -- Professional traders running mutual funds and hedge funds don't just look at a stock's price moves; they also track big changes in volume activity. Often when above-average volume moves into an equity, it precedes a large spike in volatility.

Major moves in volume can signal unusual activity, such as insider buying or selling -- or buying or selling by "superinvestors."

Unusual volume can also be a major signal that hedge funds and momentum traders are piling into a stock ahead of a catalyst. These types of traders like to get in well before a large spike, so it's always a smart move to monitor unusual volume. That said, remember to combine trend and price action with unusual volume. Put them all together to help you decipher the next big trend for any stock.

With that in mind, let's take a look at several stocks rising on unusual volume today.

Uni-Pixel

Uni-Pixel (UNXL) manufactures electronic film products using its proprietary manufacturing process, UniBoss. This stock closed up 7.6% to $16.84 in Monday's trading session.

Monday's Volume: 1.88 million

Three-Month Average Volume: 1 million

Volume % Change: 108%

From a technical perspective, UNXL bounced sharply higher here right off its 50-day moving average of $15.89 with above-average volume. This stock looks to be forming a double bottom chart pattern at $14.91 to $15.16. If that bottom holds, then shares of UNXL could see a continuation of Monday's upside action.

Traders should now look for long-biased trades in UNXL as long as it's trending above $15.16 or $14.91 and then once it sustains a move or close above Monday's high of $17.53 with volume that hits near or above 1 million shares. If we get that move soon, then UNXL will set up to re-test or possibly take out its next major overhead resistance level at its 200-day moving average of $19.89.

Inphi

Inphi (IPHI) provides high-speed analog and mixed signal semiconductor solutions for the communications, datacenter and computing markets. This stock closed up 4.7% at $13.25 in Monday's trading session.

Monday's Volume: 838,000

Three-Month Average Volume: 202,080

Volume % Change: 378%

From a technical perspective, IPHI jumped higher here right above some near-term support at $12.44 with heavy upside volume. This stock has been uptrending strong for the last five months, with shares soaring higher from its low of $8.62 to its intraday high of $13.85. During that uptrend, shares of IPHI have been consistently making higher lows and higher highs, which is bullish technical price action. That move briefly pushed shares of IPHI into breakout territory, since the stock flirted with some near-term overhead resistance at $13.50.

Traders should now look for long-biased trades in IPHI as long as it's trending above some near-term support at $12.44 and then once it sustains a move or close above its new 52-week high at $13.85 with volume that hits near or above 202,080 shares. If we get that move soon, then IPHI will set up to enter new 52-week-high territory, which is bullish technical price action. Some possible upside targets off that move are its next major overhead resistance levels at $14.79 to $16.94, or possibly even $18.

SolarCity

SolarCity (SCTY) engages in the design, installation and sale or lease of solar energy systems to residential and commercial customers, and government entities in the U.S. This stock closed up 4.7% at $35.84 in Monday's trading session.

Monday's Volume: 3.64 million

Three-Month Average Volume: 2.42 million

Volume % Change: 145%

This stock has been uptrending for the last few weeks, with shares moving higher from its low of $28.31 to its recent high of $37.87. During that move, shares of SCTY have been making mostly higher lows and higher highs, which is bullish technical price action. That move has now pushed shares of SCTY within range of triggering a near-term breakout trade. That trade will hit if SCTY manages to take out its 50-day moving average at $37.82 and then once it takes out its recent high at $37.87 with high volume.

Traders should now look for long-biased trades in SCTY as long as it's trending above some key near-term support at $34.12 and then once it sustains a move or close above those breakout levels with volume that's near or above 2.42 million shares. If that breakout hits soon, then SCTY will set up to re-test or possibly take out its next major overhead resistance levels at $43 to $45.60.

Sohu.com

Sohu.com (SOHU) is a Chinese online media, search, gaming, community and mobile service group. This stock closed up 7.5% to $69.61 in Monday's trading session.

Monday's Volume: 4.90 million

Three-Month Average Volume: 1.01 million

Volume % Change: 351%

From a technical perspective, SOHU ripped sharply higher here with heavy upside volume. This move pushed shares of SOHU into breakout territory, since the stock took out some near-term overhead resistance at $67.80. If that breakout hits soon, then SOHU will set up to enter new 52-week-high territory, which is bullish technical price action. Some possible upside targets off that breakout are $75 to $80.

Traders should now look for long-biased trades in FENG as long as it's trending above key support at $10.21 and then once it sustains a move or close above those breakout levels with volume that's near or above 474,686 shares. 5 Best Airline Stocks To Invest In 2014

Airline tickets could get more expensive, but the Transportation Security Administration would continue to guard exit lanes at airports, under the budget deal the House will vote on Thursday.

Both provisions dealing with TSA have been contentious, but one is strongly opposed by the airlines and the other is supported by airports.

Lawmakers have long eyed the TSA's security fees added to the price of each ticket as an easy source of revenue to reduce the federal deficit, including in President Obama's budget blueprint. The White House supported the deal for "targeted fee increases and spending cuts."

The congressional budget deal would change the fees from $2.50 per leg of a connecting flight capped at $5 per trip, to a flat $5.60 each way on a trip. This would generate an estimated $12.6 billion over the next decade, which the legislation says will be deposited in the general government fund.
