Advisors' Opinion:
    [By Peter Graham]

The Q3 2014 earnings report for molecular diagnostic company Myriad Genetics, Inc (NASDAQ: MYGN) is due out after the market closes on Tuesday and things could get ugly since unlike potential diagnostic stock peers such as Rosetta Genomics Ltd (NASDAQ: ROSG) and mid cap diagnostic stock Quest Diagnostics Inc (NYSE: DGX), it's the most shorted stock on the Nasdaq with short interest of 52.07%. Aside from the Myriad Genetics earnings report, it should be said that Rosetta Genomics Ltd last reported earnings on March 31st and those earnings were for the full year 2013 while Quest Diagnostics reported Q1 2014 earnings on April 24th that were a disappointment due to restructuring costs and harsh winter weather. However, Myriad Genetics has been the more interesting stock as Medicare reimbursement rate increases and the lost of a court bid to block competition while a patent-infringement case is pending have sent its shares all over the place.

  • [By John Udovich]

Small cap genomics stocks Rosetta Genomics Ltd (NASDAQ: ROSG), Genomic Health, Inc (NASDAQ: GHDX) and CollabRx Inc (NASDAQ: CLRX) are at the forefront of genomics testing or research. I should mention that Wikipedia defines genomics as a discipline in genetics that applies recombinant DNA, DNA sequencing methods and bioinformatics to sequence, assemble and analyze the function and structure of genomes (the complete set of DNA within a single cell of an organism). A 2013 Booz Allen Hamilton report on the sector noted that in 2011, the US genetic and genomic clinical testing market size was estimated to be $5.9 billion while the number of available tests has grown substantially from 1,680 just 4 years ago to 2,886 in 2012.

Big earnings movers: Campbell Soup Co. (NYSE: CPB) is down 3.2% at $43.30. Corinthian Colleges Inc. (NASDAQ: COCO) is down 10.3% at $2.34. JA Solar Holdings Co. Ltd. (NASDAQ: JASO) is down 6.9% at $7.40.

  • [By Dan Caplinger]

Finally, beyond the Dow, Chinese solar stock JA Solar (NASDAQ: JASO  ) has dropped 9.! 1% following an analyst downgrade. Despite soaring sales during the past quarter, with particularly strong growth in the Japanese market, JA Solar still isn't close to making money and has to rely on the potential for module prices to rise once some of its Chinese competitors drop out of the picture. Funding sources continue to provide financing to many struggling Chinese solar companies, and this forestalling of the day of reckoning is bad for companies like JA Solar that would benefit the most from a shakeout.

  • [By Jonathan Yates]

For investors looking to profit from shorting stocks in the sector, JA Solar Holdings (NASDAQ: JASO) and LDK Solar (NYSE: LDK) are both vulnerable. For those looking to go long, Exxon Mobil (NYSE: XOM) is very strong in natural gas, which is expected to increase its market share, according to a recent report from the Department of Energy.

  • [By Daniel Lauchheimer]

Currently, three main companies supply security equipment to the TSA - Safran (SAFRY.PK), Smiths (SMGKF.PK), and Level-3 Holdings (LLL). All three of these companies sell the whole range of their products to the TSA, with an ETD offering included. Recently, however, a new company, Implant Sciences Corporation (IMSC.PK) received approval from the TSA to begin selling their ETD equipment to airport security professionals. This approval has opened the door for IMSC to begin taking some market share away from the more established players in the US and beyond.

Why Yahoo!'s Logo Does Not Matter

Much of the media, and some analysts who follow Yahoo! Inc. (NASDAQ: YHOO), have become wildly excited about the new design of the portal company’s logo. As if it mattered. The Financial Times went so far as to report that the “redesign of the company's logo — unveiled this week — has been widely scorned.” By whom? Once observers exhausted one set of things to say about Yahoo!’s operations, clearly they had to find another.

Yahoo! placed itself at a disadvantage on the logo commentary front because its CEO Marissa Mayer has not been seen neatly dressed in a national magazine or on TV. After what seems to be dozens of M&A transactions, the public corporation’s acquisition machine has become mostly dormant. The composition of the company’s board has not changed in a few weeks, after years of frequent changes. No major shareholders have dumped their positions, as Dan Loeb of Third Point has. The news that Yahoo! sites have more unique visitors than Google Inc. (NASDAQ: GOOG) sites is weeks old. Not much is left, if the press and analysts want to maintain some level of buzz about Yahoo!

The logo change debate has gone on for years. Coca-Cola’s logo has remained mostly unchanged for a century. Perhaps that helps consumers identify the soft drink, as if people do not know what a Coke is. Ford’s logo as been about the same since the early 1900s. Maybe that allows buyers to differentiate its cars from Chevy’s. The Quaker Oats logo is pretty much the same as its was generations ago. So is McDonald’s.

At the other end of the spectrum, Google changes its logo several times a year as it celebrates holidays and the obscure birthdays of people its management thinks are famous, even if most of the public never knew these people at all. Kodak altered its logo as it emerged from Chapter 11. It might want customers to forget it went into bankruptcy. The logo, of course, will change that. American Airlines has a new logo, now that is has come out of Chapter 11 too.

Yahoo! has a new logo. Most likely, few Yahoo! users have noticed. But everyone else, especially those who have nothing else to do, have.

Rethink your finances and retirement risks

Maybe the best way to save for retirement is to actually start budgeting for a short bout of insecurity. Or lots of insecurity.

The looming pension cuts — on top of higher health care costs — facing City of Detroit retirees should give anyone reason to reconsider their retirement risks.

What would you do if you suddenly faced extra health care expenses of $400 or more a month? Or if you suddenly lost $600 a month, as some Detroit retirees faced by an annuity clawback will do, as the city works its way out of bankruptcy.

Sometimes, what looks like a healthy nest egg could easily be scrambled into an ugly mess.

To be sure, record highs for the Dow Jones industrial average in recent weeks make many consumers overall feel more comfortable about having enough money in retirement. Some people's confidence can rebound with stock prices.

About 18% of workers nationwide are now very confident, up from 13% in 2013, about having enough money for a comfortable retirement, according to a 2014 Retirement Confidence Survey released in March by the Employee Benefit Research Institute.

But here's the catch: The increased confidence was found almost exclusively among those with higher household income and strongly correlated with whether someone had a retirement plan or retirement savings.

Nearly half of workers without a retirement plan were not at all confident about their financial security in retirement.

Many workers had little or no savings for retirement.

Among workers providing savings data for the survey, about 36% said they had less than $1,000 in savings. Many of those households earned less than $35,000 a year in income.

Not having enough savings is only one side of the story.

Many seniors now also have more debt in their retirement years than they expected.

Older consumers are carrying more mortgage debt than they had in the past, according to data from the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau. Much of that mortgage debt is attributed ! to the refinancing boom — and the housing bust.

About 30% of homeowners age 65 and older carried a mortgage in 2011, the most recent data available. That's up from 22% in 2001.

For those ages 75 and older, the rate is 21.2%, up from 8.4% in 2001.

"A home can be a place of security for older Americans in their retirement years — a roof over their heads as well as a valuable asset," said Richard Cordray, director of the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau, in a statement.

"But as more seniors carry significant mortgages into retirement, they put themselves at risk of losing their nest eggs and their homes."

The median amount that older homeowners owed on their mortgages was $79,000 — up 82% from about $43,000 in 2001.

A dramatic drop in home values, and a slow climb back, cut into home equity and contributes to more financial insecurity, too. Older consumers can be at greater financial risk when they have built up less equity in their homes, which can be their primary or even only asset.

Delinquency and foreclosure are significant issues among a small group of older homeowners, according to the consumer watchdog group. Nearly 5% of homeowners ages 65 to 74 were seriously delinquent in paying their mortgages, meaning they were more than 90 days late or in foreclosure, in 2011. That's up from 0.85% in 2007.

What is clear is that it is not enough to simply create a bucket list of things to do in retirement. More of us need to re-examine our bills, spending habits and get a retirement rainy day fund. All too often, it does not work out as planned.

Obviously, it's tougher to get a job, overcome health issues and pay medical bills, as well as difficult to recover from an economic setback in retirement than when one is younger.

The consumer watchdog group suggested homeowners try to pay off the mortgage by retirement or early in retirement; avoid taking out a home equity loan or refinancing to dip into equity, and consider their expenses if they'! re retiri! ng with a mortgage.

The crisis in retirement confidence is very much part of the discussion, as 10,000 baby boomers are to reach retirement age each day for the next 17 years.

While many may discuss delaying retirement, the average American is still retiring at age 59, said Mark Hug, executive vice president of product and marketing at Prudential Insurance of America.

Feeling nervous and ill-prepared about retirement is a common theme across many groups, including women and the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender communities, he said.

The key is not to give into the fear. Try to form a your own plan of adjustment for retirement expenses.

5 of the most inexpensive colleges in the U.S.

Around four out of every 10 working American adults are college-degree holders. These degrees come with a price tag of around $23,000 per year for a moderately priced in-state college and around $45,000 for a private college, according to College Board statistics published on College Data.

With degrees having such a hefty price tag, if you earn the median household income, you'd be spending 45% of your income on in-state tuition and an astonishing 88% of your income on a private college. Even if you work in one of the highest-paying jobs, paying for a college degree out of pocket will cost a substantial portion of your income. An oral surgeon who earns the median pay for his occupation would have to put out 30% of his annual income to pay for tuition, room, board, and books at a private college.

When preparing for college, students often choose a school based on its reputation. It is a common thought that schools with big names, like the Big 10 schools or an Ivy League school, will definitely lead a degree holder's resume straight to the top of a pile.

But is there any truth to this? Some recruiters and other experts say "no." According to a publication by the College Solution, employers seek out candidates from a variety of schools – large, small, known and unknown. The publication adds that what you do during your time in school matters. Your achievements, credentials, and activities will set you apart from competition in the job market.

Considering school choice will not make or break your career opportunities and the cost of tuition is so incredibly high, why not go to an affordable college? Here is a list of some of the most inexpensive colleges and Universities in the United States, based on publications by Online U and The Best Colleges.

1. Liberty University Online

This is a non-profit school with accreditation from the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges. For the 2013 through 2014 school year, students can attend undergraduate! classes part-time for $385 per credit and full-time students pay $340 per credit hour. A student taking a full 12-hour course load pays around $4,300 per term in tuition and fees. Liberty also offers a discount for military members and for emergency response personnel.

2. Western Governor's University

Also a non-profit school, basic tuition at WGU is $2,890 per six month term. WGU advertises that was founded by 19 governors and is "designed for working adults." It offers online degree programs in many areas, such as information technology, teaching licensing programs, business degree programs and health and nursing.

3. Columbia Southern University

Undergraduate tuition at Columbia Southern is $200 credit per hour for the 2013 through 2014 school year. Offering bachelor's degree programs in basic areas like business, finance, criminal justice and information technology, CSU is accredited by the Distance Education Training Council and is a member of the American Council on Education.

4. Eastern New Mexico University

For the 2014 through 2015 academic year, tuition and fees for full-time, in-state students is $2,428 per semester ($4,856 per year) and out-of-state students pay a higher rate of $5,316 ($10,632 annually.) If you decide to live on campus as an in-state resident, you can get the whole package (ID card, room and board, as well as books included) for around $6,375. As an out-of-state student, you pay around $9,262 per semester.

5. Fort Hays State University

To attend FHSU, students pay only $182 per credit hour for undergraduate programs. This school has an 18-to-1 student to faculty ratio and it offers bachelor's degree programs in many areas, including business education, teaching, information technology, management and marketing and healthcare.

Best Warren Buffett Stocks To Own For 2015

Someone who reads my articles asked me this question:

Hi Geoff,

I wanted to ask you if you could give me an example of valuing a company with "Owner Earnings" that Buffett speaks about in his annual reportsI would like to know how do you believe he accounts for the valuation of the company if it is indeed growing?... what does he do if the company is indeed growing earnings (or free cash flow) at a 15% - 20% clip or better?

Since I not really going to answer the question you asked simply because I don think Warren Buffett values stocks that way I will give you a helpful rule of thumb for valuing fast growing businesses. Wel use your example of a company growing 20% a year. Growth rates above 20% a year are hard to sustain. So there little point incorporating them into a valuation.

ConEd has taken steps toward bolstering its non-regulated business, entering into a partnership with Sempra Energy (NYSE: SRE  ) to take 50% ownership of two of Sempra's solar farms in Nevada and Arizona. Still, one consequence of moving toward deregulated opportunities is that they can create more volatility in earnings, which could make it harder for ConEd to feel comfortable with future dividend hikes.

We're seeing the exact same setup in shares of Stericycle (SRCL), but with one big difference: This stock hasn't broken out yet. Stericycle is another ascending triangle pattern, in this case with a resistance level at $120. A breakout above that $120 price ceiling is the signal that it's time to take this trade.

Whenever you're looking at any technical price pattern, it's critical to think in terms of buyers and sellers. Triangles and other pattern names are a good quick way to explain what's going on in a stock, but they're not the reason it's tradable – instead, it all comes down to supply and demand for shares.

That $120 resistance level is a price where there has been an excess of supply of shares; in other words, it's a place where sellers have been more eager to step in and take gains than buyers have been to buy. That's what makes a breakout above it so significant -- the move means that buyers are finally strong enough to absorb all of the excess supply above that price level.

Don't be early on the SRCL trade.

Stericycle (SRCL) alone operates globally and generates close to $2 billion in annual revenues. Despite Stericycle's strong business performance during the recently reported quarter, the stock detracted from performance, partially driven by headlines of rumored regulatory action related to one of the Company's incinerators. We believe the issue is not meaningful to results and we would be willing to add to shares on pullbacks related to this. Stericycle's stock trades in the mid to high-颅eens EBITDA range, but the company routinely purchases smaller competitors for just 3X-颅X EBITDA. This accretion is a byproduct of Stericycle's competitive positioning and we believe it paves a multi-颅ear runway for double-颅igit growth.

First up is $10 billion medial waste disposal company Stericycle (SRCL). While SRCL has more or less only kept pace with the broad market in 2013, shares are at the point where they're looking primed to pop into December trading. Here's why.

Stericycle is currently forming an ascending triangle setup, a bullish price pattern that's formed by a horizontal resistance level above shares at $120 and uptrending support to the downside. Basically, as SRCL bounces in between those two technically-important price levels, it's getting squeezed closer and closer to a breakout above the $120 level. When that breakout happens, we've got a buy signal.

Whenever you're looking at any technical price pattern, it's critical to think in terms of those buyers and sellers. Triangles and other pattern names are a good quick way to explain what's going on in a stock, but they're not the reason it's tradable – instead, it all comes down to supply and demand for shares.

That $57 resistance level is a price where there has been an excess of supply of shares; in other words, it's a place where sellers have been more eager to step in and take gains than buyers have been to buy. That's what makes a breakout above it so significant -- the move means that buyers are finally strong enough to absorb all of the excess supply above that price level.

Since HSBC is a longer-term pattern, the 200-day moving average is the spot to keep a stop loss after buying. It's been a pretty good proxy for support on the way up.

Dodge unleashes most powerful Challenger ever

People gripe about how airline seats have become narrower and how fast-food portions have become smaller. But we've never heard a complaint about the SRT version of the Dodge Challenger lacking horsepower. Nevertheless, it's getting more.

The 2015 Dodge Challenger SRT Hellcat will come with the first supercharged 6.2-liter Hemi V-8 that will produce more than 600 horsepower. It will be the most powerful engine that Chrysler Group has ever produced and a huge upgrade from the SRT Challenger's standard 392 Hemi that puts out 485 horsepower.

"The new 2015 Dodge Challenger SRT Hellcat is the ultimate performance muscle car," said Tim Kuniskis, Dodge brand's CEO, in a statement. "The Challenger Hellcat has been released!"

To handle the massive load on the engine, the Hellcat will have high-strength, forged-alloy pistons coupled to powder-forged connecting rods. The cylinder heads will be aluminum alloy to handle the heat.

To go with the giant engine, the Hellcat will come with special all-season tires meant for handling "extreme loads." Plus, the largest engine merits the largest front brake package, 15.4-inch Brembos, ever offered by Chrysler as standard equipment.

Even the regular SRT Challenger — SRT is Chrysler's performance division — is no slouch. It gets 15 more horsepower from the outgoing version. It will be easy to tell the Hellcat apart from the regular by the word "Supercharged" on its fender.

Both the standard SRT and the Hellcat will come with available "segment-first" TorqueFlite automatic eight-speed transmissions.

The 2015 Dodge Challenger SRT coupes will be built at Chrysler's Brampton, Ontario, assembly plant in Canada. Production will start over the summer.

5 Best Quality Stocks For 2015

There are a precious few companies that you can buy and forget about for a decade or two. Starbucks (NASDAQ: SBUX  ) happens to be one of those companies, dominating the coffee market like no one else can.

Trouble for the competition
One sign of a great brand and quality products is when competition can't keep up, even in locations where they should have an advantage. I live in the heart of Caribou Coffee country, and even here Starbucks is a more prevalent and compelling brand. On the University of Minnesota campus, where coffee addictions are ingrained for life, Starbucks is the only coffee available. Target is also headquartered here and it has a partnership with Starbucks, not the local Caribou.

Caribou is a decent company with more creative and quirky drinks, but it doesn't have the same national draw as Starbucks. It's a regional player, not a global phenomenon, and that's one reason it's closing or rebranding 168 of its stores.

There are dozens, if not hundreds, of these smaller competitors, but Starbucks still commands a presence, even when regional players are around. You can't help but want to own a brand like that.

Top 5 States With Greatest New 401(k) Growth

The top five states with the strongest relative growth in new 401(k) plans – a good indicator of economic growth – are mostly found in the West, according to research by Judy Diamond Associates.

The national retirement plan data publisher, a unit of ThinkAdvisor’s parent company, Summit Professional Networks, found that the top state had more than 7% growth in the total number of its 401(k) plans.

“New 401(k) plans are strong indicators of the creation of entirely new businesses or businesses that have reached a level of success where they can begin to offer their employees more and better benefits,” said Eric Ryles, managing director of Judy Diamond.

Ryles added that states with the greatest ratio of new 401(k) plans also are likely those with favorable small business environments.

Judy Diamond looked at the number of newly initiated 401(k) plans in 2012, the most recent year for which a complete set of data was available. The 24,127 new plans included in the study covered 443,969 participants.

“The median participation rate for these new plans was 89 percent, which suggests that a lot of these new plans are taking advantage of automatic enrollment features, which have been available to plan sponsors for almost a decade as a result of the Pension Protection Act,” Ryles said.

"Since our previous research has shown that participation rate is the single most important factor in achieving a positive retirement outcome, this figure is tremendously encouraging. It was also nice to see that nearly two-thirds of these employers contributed some amount to the plan on behalf of the employees.”

The analysis found that participants in the new plans contributed an average of $1,769 each to their accounts, while employers added an average contribution of $1,091 per participant.

Judy Diamond is a provider of sales prospecting and plan analysis tools for benefits brokers, financial advisors, plan providers, and carriers serving the employee benefits and retirement markets.

GM to pay maximum $35 million fine for recall…

General Motors said on Friday that it will pay the maximum $35 million fine to the U.S. Department of Transportation for delays in recalling 2003-2011 small cars with a potentially deadly ignition switch defect.

The fine is part of a consent agreement with the DOT to settle its "timeliness" inquiry into whether GM notified the government within the required five business days after finding a safety defect. GM admits in the agreement that it did not. DOT says GM also agreed to make "significant and wide-ranging internal changes" in how it monitors safety issues.

In addition, GM agreed to give the DOT's National Highway Traffic Safety Administration "full access to the results of GM's internal investigation into this recall."

That's a big concession by GM. CEO Mary Barra told congressional committees in April that she wouldn't give them the full report but would hand over the parts directly related to safety. Anton "Tony" Valukas, chairman of the Chicago-based law firm Jenner & Block and a former U.S. attorney, is conducting GM's internal probe.

GM also agreed to pay an additional amount for not meeting NHTSA's deadline for submitting documents concerning events leading to the recall. The company had been fined $7,000 per day – the maximum -- since April 4 and agreed to continued paying per day until it gives NHTSA the Valukas report, which is expected no later than June 30.

The GM settlement "puts all manufacturers on notice that they will be held accountable if they fail to quickly report and address safety-related defects," said U.S. Transportation Secretary Anthony Foxx at a press conference about the agreement. Foxx urged Congress to support a proposal that would "increase the penalties we could levy in cases like this from $35 million to $300 million, sending an even stronger message that delays will not be tolerated."

An industry expert says actions such as this already are having an effect. "Car companies in general are, and will be much more, rigorous abou! t pre-introduction testing," says Jack Nerad, executive editorial director and senior analyst for Kelley Blue Book's KBB.com.

But Nerad says he says there also could be an unintended consequence. "Ironically, this climate might also curb innovation even in safety systems. The reason? Product liability. For example, car companies may have second thoughts about autonomous cars and safety systems that override the driver."

GM told NHTSA Feb. 7 that it was recalling 619,122 of its 2005-2007 Chevrolet Cobalt and 2007 Pontiac G5 small cars. On Feb. 25 it expanded the recall by748,024 vehicles to include: 2006-2007 Chevy HHR and Pontiac Solstice, 2003-2007 Saturn Ion, 2007 Saturn Skye.

Other model year of were added as GM tried to include all vehicles with similar switches and the total recalled for the switch problem now is 2.6 million vehicles worldwide.

GM documents show that it knew in 2001 there could be a problem with the key moving unexpectedly out of "run" into "accessory." That shuts off the engine, kills power assist to the steering and brakes and usually disables airbags.

It happened to a GM engineer testing a Saturn Ion. A technician reported a similar problem in 2003. And in 2004 a ranking GM small-car engineer had the switch problem in the Chevrolet Cobalt during final development of that car.

GM says it knows of 12 deaths and 46 injury or fatal accidents in the U.S. linked to the problem, and one fatal crash in Canada.

Two high-ranking engineers with links to the switches recently retired from GM and two others were put on paid leave.

In a statement on Friday, Barra said: "We have learned a great deal from this recall. We will now focus on the goal of becoming an industry leader in safety. We will emerge from this situation a stronger company."

GM still faces a probe by the Justice Department into whether there was a criminal violation, a Securities and Exchange Commission probe and Congressional investigations. A number of lawsuits are pend! ing.

Toyota faced a Justice investigation after its delayed recalls for unintended acceleration beginning in 2009. It settled the probe this year, paying a $1.2 billion fine.
